It's hard to believe that the paradise called Phú Quốc has gone virtually unnoticed until now. For all its shimmering white beachfronts, swaying palm trees and powdery sands, this diamond-shaped drop in the Gulf of Thailand has only really just come onto the tourist radar. One thing's for sure: It's there to stay! New bamboo beach huts are popping up in the coconut groves around Long Beach on the western shore, while resorts are planned en masse for the boulder-spotted coast in the east. It might be that the days of secluded lazing and tropical isolation a la Robinson Crusoe are gone, but that means new roads and better hotels, beach hostels and even Phú Quốc tour guides that offer everything from SCUBA diving to cooking lessons. You'll still catch glimpses of rustic Vietnam though, between the salt-washed fishing jetties of Ganh Dau, where multicolored skiffs bob on the light swells, and the interesting pearl and pepper farms that pop up here and there. Oh, and don't forget the seafood: it's considered some of the best in the country!
