While the DRC’s Virunga holds dominion over the world’s mountain gorillas, it’s Uganda’s Kibale that comes up trumps on the chimpanzee front. Separated from the diverse habitats of the Queen Elizabeth National Park by the waters of inland Lake George, this park is a magnet for safari-goers with a penchant for all things primate. In fact, it’s estimated that no fewer than 13 different species of primate call Kibale their home – more than in any other protected area on the planet!
This wealth of fauna means the park’s primeval and montane rainforests are well served by Kibale National Park tour guides leading morning and afternoon expeditions to spy out wild creatures, most notably organised Chimpanzee tracking excursions. Expect everything from swinging L'Hoest’s monkey to cheeky colobuses in the canopies above, not to mention the elusive blue monkey and even wandering herds of wild elephant. What’s more, Kibale also plays host to a formidable array of plant life and bird species, with spots like the Kihingami Wetland and the Bigodi Reserve offering something of a breather from the dense canopies of eucalyptus and evergreens.
