A beautifully isolated town that lies along the shores of Lake Victoria, Jinja is blessed with unexplored and hence charming beaches and islands. Old Asian-inspired buildings are the primary type of architecture that can be seen in much of the town, a memory of when the town had a large and influential Asian population. These buildings have but recently gone in for a facelift along with planting of trees and building of roads and street lighting in a major campaign to promote Jinja as a tourist destination. This move definitely seems to be paying off as Jinja tour guides teach increasing number of visitors about the history, culture, and natural endowments of this region. One of Jinja’s unique attractions is as the source of the majestic river Nile. The town is within close proximity the Owen Falls Dam, a hydroelectric station that provides much of Uganda’s electricity. Do remember to visit the Bujagali Falls and the Itanda Falls, where you can enjoy white water rafting and kayaking, parasail in the mist of towering falls, ride ATVs through muddy trails, indulge in bird watching and hike along remote jungle paths to watch animals in their natural habitat.
