One of the most densely populated towns in Uganda, Fort Portal perched at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains is also one of the top gateways to its western wilds. Naturally hence, the town is brimming with Fort Portal tour guides just waiting to take visitors out to the stalactites at the Amabere Caves, the bird populace at the Queen Elizabeth National Park, the wetland at Bigodi, and the hot springs of the Semuliki Park. And that's not even mentioning the eye-watering vistas of the Crater Lakes region, or the chimpanzees that lurk in the depths of the Kibale Forest National Park which is surely one of the top outdoorsy draws in all of Uganda. Back in the center of Fort Portal, there are a few good hotels all primed for trekkers, along with a clutch of earthy teahouses that serve high quality teas, proudly sourced from the tea plantations right there.
