Shrouded in biblical tales aplenty and hailed by many as the legendary birthplace of the Abrahamic prophets Job and Abraham, Urfa remains one of south-central Turkey’s most totemic of religious destinations. Its centre is steeped in the historical traditions of millennia; here pilgrims can be spied moving between the dusty colonnades that line the bubbling arabesque bazaar, on their way towards the revered Dergah complex, where the Cave of Abraham cuts into the rock and the twin minarets of the great Mevlid-i Halil Camii Mosque loom overhead. Elsewhere, Urfa tour guides help travellers haggle amidst bazaars that look as if they’ve stood for centuries, tanned locals devour lahmajoon and kofte, and the silhouettes of figures can be spotted reclining under leafy maple trees, beclouded glasses of tea at the ready. The Prophets city is also home to the great Gobekli Tepe, which has been hailed as the oldest extant temple complex on the planet, dating to around 10,000 BC and awash with Neolithic treasures ad infinitum.
