Eulogised as the place with ‘the most beautiful sky in the world’ by Herodotus, the sun-kissed town of Aydin continues to enjoy its ancient location amidst the rolling fig orchards and meandering streams of the Buyuk Menderes River at the southern end of the Turkish Mediterranean seaboard. Today, visitors flock in on day trips from the coast, eager to spy out the patchwork of ancient Greek ruins and Ottoman architecture that coalesces around the town and its adjoining province. They typically head to the imperial mosque of Ramazan Pasa and the nearby Roman remains of Tralles, before delving into the coinage collections of the Aydin Museum.
