- The journey to Materuni takes you through scenic rural landscapes, with views of lush coffee plantations and towering mountains. As you travel, you’ll be captivated by the natural beauty surrounding the area—rolling hills, forests, and breathtaking vistas that set the stage for your day of adventure.
Arrival at Materuni Waterfalls:

- This stunning waterfall is a hidden gem tucked away in the forest and is one of the most picturesque spots in Tanzania. As you walk through the lush, green rainforest, you will be surrounded by towering trees, vibrant plants, and colorful birds.
- The hike to the waterfall is short but rewarding, with the sound of the cascading water growing louder as you approach. Upon reaching the falls, you’ll be able to take in the majestic sight of water tumbling down from a height of over 80 meters (262 feet). The serene and peaceful surrounding area provides an ideal spot for photos and nature appreciation.
- For those who love photography, the falls offer an unforgettable photo opportunity as the mist rises from the base of the waterfall, creating a magical atmosphere.
Coffee Tour and Tasting:
- After your waterfall experience, you will be treated to a tour of a local coffee farm in Materuni. The village is known for producing some of the finest coffee in Tanzania, and this tour provides an in-depth look at the coffee-growing process.
- You will be guided through the coffee plantation, where you will learn how Kilimanjaro coffee is cultivated. The local farmers will explain the organic methods used to grow the beans, the different types of coffee grown in the region, and the important role coffee plays in the livelihoods of the Chagga people.
- Coffee Picking: If you’re visiting during the coffee harvest season, you may even have the chance to participate in picking the coffee cherries.
- Roasting the Beans: After the coffee cherries are picked, they are roasted over an open flame. You will get a hands-on experience as you roast the beans yourself, a process that takes about 30 minutes.
- Coffee Tasting: Once the beans are roasted, you will be treated to a fresh cup of coffee, brewed right from the beans you’ve just roasted. The taste of Kilimanjaro coffee is rich and bold, with a unique flavor profile that comes from the altitude and rich volcanic soil of the region. This is an authentic coffee-tasting experience that will give you a new appreciation for the journey from bean to cup.
Traditional Chagga Lunch:
- After the coffee experience, you will enjoy a traditional Chagga lunch in a local home or at a community centre. The Chagga people are known for their agricultural expertise and their delicious, hearty meals.
- The meal will typically feature stews of meat or chicken, served with plantains, maize, vegetables, and other fresh, locally grown ingredients. You will have the chance to chat with the local villagers and learn more about their culture while enjoying the meal.
- This is a fantastic opportunity to connect with the local community as you experience the hospitality of the Chagga people and learn about their agricultural practices and lifestyle.
Afternoon Relaxation and Exploration:
