Description
Four days, three countries. Is it possible? Yes, it is! We will take you on this tour from Ljubljana to the Slovenian Karst region and its wonderful Škocjan Caves with underground canyons, stalactites, stalagmites and halls. Next stop is the cosmopolitan port city of Trieste on the Italian side of the border. Further on, back in Slovenia again, we will see the charming jewel town of Piran on the Adriatic coast, known also as Little Venice. On the second day we will visit some of the most beautiful Croatian fortified hill-towns, known as kašteli. Croatian day ends in Rovinj, another charming old town on the coast of the Istrian peninsula. From Rovinj, we go back north, where we visit the wine region of Goriška Brda and proceed further on to Kobarid in Slovenia, where an important part of history happened in WW1. In Kobarid, we will visit the magnificent Kozjek Waterfall and ride up Soča Valley to the town of Bovec. From Soča Valley, we will pass Vršič pass, and, on the other side of the spectacular mountains of Julian Alps, descend into the little scenic alpine town and ski resort of Kranjska Gora. Come with us, let’s have some travel fun!
Itinerary
-
Day 1: Škocjan Caves, Trieste, and Piran
- From Ljubljana, we take a ride to beautiful Škocjan caves with stalactites, stalagmites and an underground river canyon. We will walk (1,5h) through this UNESCO cave system and hear stories about how river Reka has dug out caves for millions of years.
- We take a short ride to the metropolitan city of Trieste in Italy. We take a walk through the city centre and see Piazza Unita Square, Piazza della Borsa, old port and ruins of the old Roman Theatre. After that we go for sightseeing at beautiful Miramare and Duino Castle and go for a walk on famous Rilke trail, named after Austrian poet Reiner Maria Rilke. It is a panoramic trail nearby Trieste on the top of sea cliffs with great views of Adriatic Sea.
- We will do a sightseeing Tour of the small but beautiful town of Piran, also known as "Little Venice". We will start at the town's wall tower with magnificent views of this Mediterranean jewel from above, proceed to Tartini Square, climb uphill to St. George's Church, stroll through the labyrinth of narrow streets, see old diving bells and scafanders at the Underwater Activities Museum. Dinner in one of the delicious restaurants on the town's Promenade by the Sea.
Overnight stay in Piran.
-
Day 2: Grožnjan, Motovun, & Rovinj
- Breakfast. We take a ride to Grožnjan, a picturesque fortified hill town in the Croatian Istria peninsula. It is even more tranquil and has this artistic touch. You can try some truffles here and enjoy the easy-going atmosphere of the locals. We will walk through old narrow streets, see old houses, step into a local truffle shop or art gallery and see many cats that roam the town in their own grace.
- The medieval fortified hill town of Motovun in Croatian Istria is pretty unique. We will enjoy its charm and atmosphere and the view of the surrounding countryside. Did you know that famous Italian Formula 1 driver Mario Andretti was born here? We will walk through the main Town Gate in the Town Wall, enter the oldest part of the town and see the Main Town Square with St. Stephen's Church and Belltower, as well as the Town's Palace. We will see old stone wells, walk on the top of an old defensive stone wall with fortification towers and have a coffee or a drink on a shady terrace nearby.
- Rovinj is a beautiful medieval Croatian town on the Adriatic coast of the Istrian Peninsula. You can immerse yourself in its charm, see its main attractions and enjoy tasteful food and local wine. We will see the main town square, Fisherman's Port and Promenade. We will walk through beautiful stone-paved streets with narrow and mysterious passages where locals still live. We will take a stroll on a promenade on the top of the peninsula, climb up to St. Euphemia's Church and even to the belltower, if in the right mood.
Overnight stay in Rovinj.
-
Day 3: Dobrovo v Goriška Brda & Soča Valley
- We have a ride through the villages and vineyards of Goriška Brda.
- We stop at Dobrovo Castle and see the wine cellar, which is famous for its quality local wines.

We visit the town of Kobarid in the unspoiled Soča Valley in the Julian Alps, where we hike a short hike (40 min) up to the magical Kozjek Waterfall inside a small cave. We proceed to the small town of Bovec, where we take an afternoon off or (optional) visit one of the beautiful gorges of the turquoise Soča River.
-
Day 4: Kranjska Gora & Vršič Pass
- In the morning we can do some white water rafting on the Soča river(optional) if you like adrenaline sports. We enjoy the ride to Vršič Pass (1611 m) with breathtaking views of the surrounding alpine peaks of the picturesque Julian Alps. We stop at viewpoints along the way for some breathtaking views and photos along the way. On the other side of the pass, we descend to the Sava River valley and the alpine town of Kranjska Gora.
- Nearby Kranjska Gora, we visit the small alpine lake Jasna and take a walk on its banks.
