Day 1- Arrival in Nairobi, Kenya

Know Before You Go
1. Passport & Visa Requirements:
Passport Validity: Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.
Visas: Most travelers to Kenya and Tanzania require a visa. Check the visa requirements for your nationality. You can apply for e-visas for Kenya and Tanzania online before your trip. Ensure you have both entry visas if traveling between the two countries.
2. Health & Vaccinations:
Vaccinations: Recommended vaccinations for travel to Kenya and Tanzania include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, and Tetanus. Malaria is prevalent in some areas, so consider taking malaria prophylaxis (consult your doctor before traveling).

4. Tipping:
Safari Guides & Lodge Staff: Tipping is customary but not mandatory. The general guideline is:
Safari guide: $10-$20 per day per guest
Lodge staff: $5-$10 per day per guest
Porters and housekeepers: $2-$3 per service
Tipping can be done at the end of your trip in a tip box or directly to the staff.
5. Climate & Weather:
Best Time to Visit: The best months for a safari in East Africa are from June to October (dry season) and December to March. However, it’s important to know that weather can vary:
Rainy Season (March-May & November): Expect occasional showers, but also lush landscapes and fewer tourists.
Dry Season (June-October & December-March): The weather is warmer and dry, and wildlife congregates around water sources, making it easier to spot animals.
Daytime Temperature: Expect temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F) during the day, though it can get cooler in the mornings and evenings, especially in higher altitudes like Ngorongoro Crater.
Pack accordingly: Bring layers, a light sweater or jacket for chilly mornings and evenings, and breathable clothing for daytime.
6. Safari Etiquette:
Respect Wildlife: Always maintain a safe distance from wildlife. Do not feed the animals or make loud noises. Your safari guide will instruct you on the best practices to ensure your safety and that of the animals.
Game Drive Etiquette: When on a game drive, be respectful of other guests. Do not block their views, and always stay within the vehicle unless the guide says it's safe to get out (usually only at designated areas).
Silent Observation: For the best experience, stay quiet and avoid sudden movements, especially during wildlife sightings, as animals can be easily startled.
7. Mobile Phones & Internet:
Wi-Fi Access: Some lodges and camps may offer limited Wi-Fi, but it is generally not guaranteed, especially in more remote areas. Consider using the opportunity to disconnect and immerse yourself fully in the safari experience.
Phone Coverage: There is often phone reception in major towns and lodges but limited connectivity in the parks. If you're planning to use your phone for navigation or as a camera, be sure to bring extra charging devices.
8. Time Zone & Communication:
Time Zone: Kenya and Tanzania are both in the East Africa Time Zone (EAT), which is UTC +3 hours. There is no daylight saving time in these regions.
Language: Swahili and English are the official languages in both Kenya and Tanzania. While Swahili is widely spoken, many safari guides and lodge staff speak English fluently, so communication will not be an issue.
9. Safety & Security:
Travel Safety: While Kenya and Tanzania are generally safe for tourists, it's important to stay vigilant in urban areas, such as Nairobi or Arusha. Avoid walking around late at night, especially in unfamiliar areas.
Safari Security: Always stay within the vehicle during game drives unless instructed otherwise by your guide. Follow safety protocols at the lodges and camps to ensure your well-being.
Wildlife Safety: Never approach wildlife, especially predators like lions or elephants. Always listen to your guide's instructions.
10. Electrical Power & Charging:
Power Outages: Be prepared for occasional power outages in remote areas. Many lodges run on generators that may only operate during certain hours, so make sure to charge your devices during available hours.
Voltage: Kenya and Tanzania use 220V electricity. Bring a travel adapter if your devices use a different plug type.
11. Photography Tips:
Camera Gear: Bring a camera with a good zoom lens (at least 200mm) for wildlife photography. A wide-angle lens can also be useful for capturing landscapes and scenery. A tripod is optional but helpful.
