Description
Located in the south part of the Cordillera Blanca, it's one of the glaciers left in the tropical areas of South America; the glacier is around 8 square km in size and around 4 km long, with terrestrial snow ending. The glacier is retreating quickly; it has lost 22% of its size and 15.5% of its ice mass in the last 30 years. The glacier occupies an Andean peak around 5250 masl and so has steep, cliff-like edges, with heavily crevassed areas characteristic of a cirque glacier.

Pastoruri Glacier Full Day Tour
- Breakfast in the morning at the hotel and depart at 8 am, driving south side Huaraz. At around 25 km, we will visit Recuay province at 3300 masl, and continue to Ticampampa 3400 masl, Catac 3500 masl. Continue to Pachacoto; from here, we will turn east side by an unpaved road, a wonderful landscape of highlands full of straw and cold wind, traditional with sheep herders.
- After 15 km from the highway, we will stop next to a small lake called Patococha for birdwatching like wild ducks, Andean geese, caracara birds and others. Then the next stop will be at the Gasified water stream, drinkable gasified water flows underground here. Then, continue to the next stop at the enormous flowers of Puya Raimondii and the changing colour small lake at Pumapampa. Its changing color is an effect of radiation of the sun and minerals containing rock inside the water.
- Continue to petroglyph paints, and then after a few km, approx 10, we will arrive at Pastoruri parking place. From here to the Ice Mountain is about 1km, you can walk an easy hiking or get a horseback ride to get through the snow mountain of Pastoruri. Once there, you will enjoy walking around and visiting the Iced Lake and Ice cave. After a few hours of staying in Pastoruri, drive back the same way, direct to Huaraz, arriving around 6 pm.
