Description
Urgut is a town in the Samarkand Province of Uzbekistan, about 50 kilometres southeast of Samarkand. It is located at the foot of the Zeravshan Mountains at an altitude of 1,000 metres and borders Kashkadarya oblast. Urgut received city status in 1973 and is now the district centre of Urgut district. The city has several carpet-weaving, tobacco-fermentation and slate factories. Urgut is of great interest to tourists, as it has been considered a major centre of traditional crafts since ancient times.
Itinerary
-
Urgut
- Meeting with the guide and driver at the hotel in Samarkand.
- Depart Samarkand and drive to the garden Chor-Chinor, translated from the Tajik language as ‘four chinaras’. This sacral place is home to plane trees, which are 600 to 1160 years old. Here, you will find the famous giant tree, whose girth is 16 metres. The hollow of this mighty plane tree used to house an entire school for classes, and there are still tables and chairs there. Amazingly, the tree is still standing and growing.
- Then head to Urgut Bazaar, a local oriental market where you will find items with an inspiring oriental flavour. The market is open every day, but the best days to visit are Wednesday and Sunday.
- In the second half of the day, return to Samarkand and visit Konigil village and Mero's paper factory, founded by the famous Mukhtarov brothers. Thanks to their efforts at the local factory, the ancient tradition of making paper according to the old Samarkand technologies has been revived. Interestingly, all the production is done manually, and every factory guest can watch the paper-making process with his own eyes.
- You can observe the process of making silk carpets and various silk products and visit the factory's local shop.
- Transfer to the hotel. End of the trip in Urgut and excursion to the Silk Carpet Factory.
