Description
Explore Porta Napoli, followed by the Cathedral Square and St. Irene's Church, visit the city's Santa Croce church. Lecce is a riot of cherubs, the Baroque masterpiece of southern Italy. Sometimes described as the 'Florence of the Baroque' or the 'Rome of the South', Lecce is really the only city destination in mainland Italy south of Naples, appealing enough to attract large numbers of tourists. The city also has a long traditional affinity with Greek culture going back to its foundation; the Messapians who founded the city are said to have been Cretans in Greek records.
