Description

Ascend Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania via the Marangu Route. It can be finished in as little as three days and is referred to as the "Coca-Cola" route because it's easier than other routes. However, because of the quick ascent and short acclimatization period, this route has a lower success rate than longer routes. The trail takes one night at Mandara Hut and one day at Horombo Hut. For those who enjoy hiking but are unable to reach Uhuru Peak, Macpace Tours & Safaris has arranged a short trip. You will stay in park huts if you are going on an overnight hike.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

The climb begins at the Marangu Gate where you will complete registration formalities and meet your guide and porters. The trek starts through lush rainforest, offering opportunities for wildlife sightings. After approximately 3-4 hours of hiking, you will reach Mandara Hut where you will spend the night.
Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

The second day involves a longer trek through both forested and moorland areas. You will pass by Maundi Crater with its stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The hike takes around 5-6 hours before reaching Horombo Hut where you will spend the night.
Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and descent to Marangu Gate (1,860m)

The final day begins early in the morning, around midnight, for the summit attempt. The ascent to the summit is challenging, involving steep and rocky terrain. After reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, you will descend back to Horombo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Marangu Gate. The total trekking time for this day is approximately 12-14 hours.

What To Bring

Sleeping Bag: A warm sleeping bag suitable for cold temperatures is necessary as the nights can be chilly at higher elevations.

Hiking Boots: Sturdy and comfortable hiking boots with good ankle support are crucial for tackling the rugged terrain.

Headlamp: A headlamp is essential for the early morning summit attempt when it is still dark outside.

Water Bottles and Water Purification Tablets: Staying hydrated is vital during the climb. Carry water bottles and water purification tablets to ensure a safe supply of drinking water.
