Tour Of Trier- On The Banks Of Moselle
- Begin your tour at the iconic Porta Nigra, a well-preserved Roman city gate that dates back to the 2nd century AD. Admire its massive stone blocks, arches, and towers, and learn about its history and significance from the information boards nearby. Take some photos and enjoy the view of the city from the top of the gate.
- Walk through the main street to the central market. Follow the pedestrian zone of Simeonstraße, which is lined with shops, cafes, and historical buildings, to reach the Hauptmarkt (Central Market). This lively square is surrounded by colourful houses, fountains, and cafes, and hosts a daily market where you can find local produce, crafts, and souvenirs. Take a stroll around the square and soak up the atmosphere.
- Head to the nearby Domplatz (Cathedral Square) and visit the Trier Cathedral, one of the oldest and most impressive churches in Germany. Marvel at its Romanesque architecture, Gothic choir, and medieval art, and learn about its rich history, including its role as the burial place of several bishops and emperors. You can also see the Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) and the Dreikönigenhaus (House of the Three Magi) nearby.
- From the cathedral, walk to the nearby Konstantinplatz and visit the Konstantinbasilika (Basilica of Constantine), a former throne room of a Roman emperor that was later converted into a church. Admire its soaring pillars, intricate mosaics, and colourful frescoes, and imagine the grandeur of the Roman court that once convened here. You can also visit the adjacent Bischofliches Dom- und Diozesanmuseum (Episcopal Cathedral and Diocesan Museum), which displays a rich collection of religious art and artefacts.
- After that, make your way to the nearby Kurfürstliches Palais (Electoral Palace), which was once the residence of the archbishops of Trier. Enjoy a stroll through its magnificent gardens, which feature fountains, statues, and ornamental plants.
