Itinerary
-
Explore the historical landmarks & battlefield of the Incas in Ollantaytambo
- Meet your guide and begin the tour at an Inca crop terrace, situated 9000 ft (2700 mts) above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the "Sacred Valley of the Incas" and its majestic mountains. These terraces were used for crop cultivation, which was vital to Inca life, and still holds contemporary significance, which will be discussed during the tour.
- Climb up the stone steps to the "Temple of the Sun," an awe-inspiring Inca temple with an altar made of stones weighing more than 50 tons, brought from far-off places. The tour will reveal the mysteries of Inca architecture, including how they moved large stones across mountains and precisely cut them to fit together.
- Then, walk through the remnants of an ancient battlefield town, where you will learn about the incredible tactics used by the Incas to defeat the Spanish conquistadores in the epic Ollantaytambo Battle. You will explore the various fortified defences that secured the town's triumph.
- Afterwards, head to the town's beautiful main square to learn about Ollanta, the Inca commander who named the town. A prominent statue of Ollanta stands in the square.
- Next, you will walk down the narrow, pebbled stone streets, passing through ancient water canals and mountain ruins, which are testament to one of South America's most incredible civilizations. You will also see the ancient granaries and storehouses that once made the town a powerful location, allowing the Incas to conquer the Spanish Conquistadors. You will get to witness the beauty of Temple Hill and the terraces where various local crops, such as Coca, are grown.
- Finally, you will visit a local family's hundred-year-old home, where they can learn more about local traditions, such as hanging skulls on the walls and keeping guinea pigs as pets.
