Description
Did you know that Madrid traces its origins to 'Mayrit', the name bestowed by Arabs 1200 years ago to mean a land full of water? Embark on a tour of Madrid, starting at the grand Royal Palace, and marvel at the Almudena Cathedral, Old City Hall Square, and Plaza Mayor, where bullfights and carnivals have occurred for over 400 years. Indulge in the city's famous San Miguel Market and learn how Madrid became the capital of Spain.
Itinerary
-
Madrid's Landmarks in Downtown
- Meet the guide at Punto de Información Turística Palacio Real and start the tour at the location of the Royal Palace, the biggest palace in Western Europe with more than 3000 rooms! The Almudena Cathedral right next to it is an exciting mixture of artistic styles which just ended construction recently and is used for regular royal ceremonies.
- Then, we will get lost in the alleys downtown. Walk through the Old City Hall Square as the guide points out the Arabic influences or tells you about how the royal family moved the court to Madrid to make it the capital.
- Our path will also take us to one of the oldest restaurants globally and the famous and lovely San Miguel Market to see how we casually eat in Spain.
- But Madrid is nothing without its famous Plaza Mayor, a centre point for the madrileños for the last 400 years full of stories and public entertainment, from bullfights to carnivals.
- We will end our tour at Puerta del Sol, the famous location where our city welcomes the New Year.
