Itinerary
-
Visit the Highlights of Cairo
- Have breakfast and head to Giza Plateau to visit one of the seven wonders of the ancient world- The Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) and 3 small pyramids. You will continue to explore the rest of the Giza plateau, including the sight of Khafre’s (kaphren) pyramid - Khufu's son (the second-largest pyramid on the Giza site), the remains of the funeral temple, the pyramid of Mankawra (Mykerinus) and 3 small pyramids.
- Proceed to visit the Great Sphinx, the head of a pharaoh with a lion's body, which dates from the time of Chephren.
- Visit the Valley Temple, which belongs to the pyramids of Chephren. This temple served two functions: First, it was used for the purification of the mummy of the king before its burial. Second, it was used for making the Mummification process of the king. After visiting the pyramids, you'll continue across the plateau for a photo of the three pyramids rising from the sands, with the Cairo skyline in the background.
- Move to visit the Step Pyramid of Zoser, the world's oldest major stone structure. It was built in the 3rd Dynasty (around 2630 BC) for King Djoser. The famous step pyramid of Sakkara is considered the world's first large-scale carved stone structure. As its name suggests, it is a series of six levels of stones that decrease in size until they reach a height of 62 meters (200 feet). This structure predates them, and as per archaeologists’ understanding, these are important for the development of pyramid construction. Also, see the Museum of Imnhotep, the tomb of a high official, the pyramid of king Titi, and the pyramid of king Unas and Nobles Tombs.
- Travel for 25 km, and you will see the pyramid at Meidum. It is thought to be just the second pyramid built after Djoser's and may have been originally built for Huni, the last pharaoh of the Third Dynasty and continued by Sneferu. Because of its unusual appearance, the pyramid is called el-heram el-kaddaab — (Pseudo Pyramid) in Egyptian Arabic.
