Hyderabad was founded by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591, the 4th King of Golconda. It rapidly developed into a center of Islamic culture and a key political hub in the Deccan. The city is known for its memorable architecture and its monuments, the most famous of them being the Charminar. The city is noted for the coexistence of Hindu and Muslim traditions.

Hyderabad has a history of trade in precious gems; its role in the pearl trade has given it the name "City of Pearls" and is famous for its wide variety of pearls. Until the 18th century, the city was also the only global trading centre for large diamonds.

Hyderabadi cuisine comprises a broad repertoire of rice, wheat and meat dishes, and various spices' skilled use. It is known for its famous Hyderabadi Biriyani prepared with marinated lamb meat/chicken, rice and spices.
