Description
Sign-up for a 5-day hiking tour to the highest point in Africa, Uhuru Peak via the Marangu route, commonly known as the Coca Cola route, because it is easier than the many other routes. Come across rain forests, semi-deserts and the Maundi Crater. This trek involves multiple stopovers like Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut and Kibo Hut.
Itinerary
-
Day 1 - Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
- Your guide and a mountain support crew will receive you at the hotel in the morning and hold a quick briefing. You will drive to the eastern entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park: Marangu Gate. After acquiring climbing permits and successfully registering with the search and rescue service, you will trek to Mandara Hut (2,700 m). The trekking route includes passages through the rainforest (where tropical showers are highly probable), so we recommend you take spare clothes and your raincoats. When you finally reach the camp, our mountain support crew will take care of the necessities, draw the tents, and prepare lunch.
- Throughout the entire Marangu route, you will spend your nights in unique huts. These huts offer a great alternative to those who do not feel comfortable sleeping in tents.
It will be your very first day at this height, so it is strongly recommended you pay attention to the following instructions from this point on:
- Keep yourself away from alcohol and caffeine.
- Drink at least 4 litres of bottled water daily (little by little, frequently)
- Take a Diamox pill to help reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness. Most mountain climbers take the medication in the morning before starting their ascent to minimise discomfort associated with altitude sickness. We recommend you consult your doctor before the trip in case of potential allergies.
- At night you might experience discomfort associated with acclimatisation at such a high altitude. Because of a reduction in your awake breathing pattern, your body gets less oxygen at night than during the day. Taking height into account, you can, therefore, start to feel sick and have a headache. Pay full attention to your own body and tell your guide if you start feeling any symptoms of altitude sickness.
-
Day 2 - Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
- After breakfast, the group will leave Mandara Hut early in the morning to start a modest trek towards the second high altitude camp/halt: Horombo Hut (3,720 m).
- Once you reach the camp today, you will be treated to breathtaking views of two volcanos at once: Kibo and Mawenzi.
- Few hours after lunch, you will have to complete an acclimatization hike in the direction of Kibo Hut with a 200-meter gain in height and then hike back down to Horombo Hut, where dinner will be ready for you.
Note: This acclimatization hike is an easy trek with a slight gain in altitude to speed up the acclimatization process. You should take the acclimatization hikes seriously. They help improve your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro and save you from any consequences of altitude sickness.
Acclimatization trek
Trekking distance: 2.5 km
Trekking time: 1–2 hours
-
Day 3 - Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
- On this day, after breakfast, the group will hike to the Kibo Hut (4,700 m). The actual trekking is not much tricky; always remember to stick with the appropriate pace to keep up your strength to reach Kilimanjaro's summit.
- Once you reach the camp, you will be served delicious lunch, after which we recommend you to sleep as much as you can, avoid any strenuous activity, and drink lots of water.
-
Day 4 - Uhuru Peak & Descent to Horombo Hut
- At night, depart from Kibo Hut (4,700 m) and start trekking to Kilimanjaro's summit: the Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). The hike will be modest from a physical standpoint, but the altitude is a more severe problem. For the entire duration of the trekking, each pair of climbers will be accompanied by their personal guide, who will be monitoring your stamina and mental status.
- After you successfully ascent to Uhuru Peak, you can trek down to the nearest glacier if desired.
- Next, you will return to Kibo Camp and, after a much needed two-hour rest, continue your descent to Horombo Hut (3,720 m).
Note: Do not forget that almost all accidents occur during the descent, including all broken arms and legs and necks. Please be careful with your feet, as there is a high risk of damaging your toenails.
-
Day 5 - Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
- You will be offered a delicious breakfast in the morning, after which, head for the Kilimanjaro National Park's exit: Marangu Gate (1,860 m).
- After your successful descent, the whole group will gather up to congratulate you, and then you will have the chance to share your opinions on the trip in the guestbook. Lastly, we will present you with your commemorative certificates (in our office) and provide you with a transfer back to the hotel.
