The name of the city comes from the Turkic word syknak, meaning a fortified place, a shelter, a fortification. The city was founded in the XVII century under King Irakli II. and, as locals say, this is the only city in Georgia that has completely preserved the walls. The total length of the fences is 4.5 km. They are adjacent to 28 watchtowers. The main fortress gates are very beautiful and look like a stone arch. By the stairs arranged nearby, you can climb the walls, from where you can see the city and Alazani Valley.
