Itinerary
-
Negombo - Sigiriya
You will be picked up from your hotel in Negombo. Then, start your journey to the Pidurangala Rock. Pidurangala is a towering rock adjacent to Sigiriya. The two rocks have an interlinked history: whilst King Kasyapa was building Sigiriya Rock Fortress in the 5th century, he moved monks living around Sigiriya to a new monastery on Pidurangala Rock.
See, an ancient cave temple still houses objects from various vintages that reflect Buddhist, Hindu and western beliefs, and the stupa to the left of the temple entrance is believed to mark the spot where King Kasyapa was cremated.
Stop for lunch and hike the 8th wonder of the world, Sigiriya Rock, a site of historical and archaeological significance. It is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 meters (660 feet) high. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa, this site was selected by King Kasyapa for his new capital.
Finish your day with a tour to see the crafts of the traditional artisans in Sigiriya, including wood carvers and batik makers.
Learn about the process of their work and purchase some great souvenirs.
At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back in Negombo.
