Description

Take a walk down the Tuscan gem of Volterra with me on this exciting Online Experience! We will begin our virtual tour with a breathtaking view of the cityscape and the sea from a well-known terrace in the city. You will notice how the city is still surrounded by the Medieval walls, and in some places, I will also point out to you the massive cyclopean walls of the Etruscan age. We will then make our way to the Etruscan gate, also known as Porta all’Arco, which was part of the Etruscan walls of the fourth century B.C. Over the ages, it has become the city's most beloved symbol. In fact, the citizens of Volterra saved it from destruction at the end of World War II, and as we walk around, I will tell you more about how they managed to do it.
Crossing the gate, we will find ourselves inside a perfectly preserved medieval city centre: the San Giovanni Square with the Romanesque Cathedral and the Baptistery, an octagonal structure dating back to the thirteenth century whose walls are decorated in the classic white and green two-tone marble. Behind the square, we will see the spectacular “Piazza dei Priori”, which is overlooked by the austere “Palazzo dei Priori”. A stroll around this area will allow us to explore the many buildings that made up the city's political heart in the Middle Ages.

As we near the end of our tour, we will continue down the maze of medieval streets and alleys to one of the most interesting sites in all of Volterra: the beautiful archaeological site of a Roman Theatre that was discovered in the twentieth century under a soccer field. Historic and picturesque, this last destination will frame your memories of this virtual tour in the most endearing way possible.

Meet your Host
Claudia Meucci

I am a professional tourist guide since 2003 and I was born under the Tuscan sun, in the Etruscan city of Volterra. Growing up in such a magical place, I was enchanted by the ancient history and art of my hometown, and that passion led me to this profession. One of the aspects I love most about my job is when I am able to make visitors from far away feel at home here in Tuscany. I consider myself fortunate for being an “ambassador” to our Tuscan traditions, culture, and art. I enjoy the challenge of captivating the interest of visitors and in particular making the tours children and family-friendly.
