Description

Evora is a UNESCO World Heritage site, surrounded by medieval walls and full of historical remains that range all the way back to the 1st century when it was founded by the Romans. You will find here four main historic traces: those of the Romans, the Moors and the Jews, the Christian reconquest, and the Renaissance period when Evora was the second most important town in Portugal. Join me on this Online Experience to explore how these periods have shaped the beauty and character of Evora.
We will begin our tour from the Roman Temple known as Ebora Cerealis, which dates all the way back to the 1st century. Then, we will visit Inquisition Palace, built in the 16th century, where many trials against the Jewish community took place, forcing many families to flee to the US, Brazil, and Israel. Going ahead, we will visit the Cathedral of Evora. Constructed in the 13th century to mark the end of the Islamic period, it is popular today for its statue of the Virgin Mary; the Nossa Senhora do O.
Our next stop on tour will be Rua 5 de Outubro, a shopping street that goes all the way back to the Roman era. There are exquisite handicrafts, cork products, pottery, wine, olive oil, clothes, and several restaurants. Walking through this vibrant street, we will make our way to the main square, the Praca do Girald, a magnificent example of 15th-century architecture. It is the heart of Evora, perpetually full of chatter and people. After spending some time here, we will move to the Saint Francis Church, one of the most beautiful churches in Portugal with its baroque gold-carved wood.

Next, we will visit one of the most important buildings in Evora: the Bones Chapel, which stands entirely decorated with human bones and is meant to make one ponder mortality and the importance of life. After taking in this magnificent and humbling building, we will visit the Royal Public Garden. This tranquil garden houses many wonderful peacocks and is the perfect place to end our tour of this beautiful city.

Like a good wine, we are a good blend of cultures. She loves people with a sense of humour. Another of her interests is cooking and eating, so she is really attached to the local gastronomy and to our great wines. Travelling includes visiting, learning, savouring, and feeling the experience of being there as a local. This is what she wants to provide to you on this unique Online Experience.

Veronica Chinca was born in Italy in a family connected to tourism. She had a special bond with this job from a young age, thanks to my father. She came with her family to live in Evora when she was eight years old. Her academic education began in 1996 in Estoril – ESHTE – and she started to work in 2000. She had an extended career as a travel agent, but in 2014 she decided to dedicate only and exclusively to her original job, guiding. It is her pleasure to show you all the little details of this wonderful city museum and the Region Alentejo.
