Walk in the historic centre of Birkirkara

I graduated from the University of Malta as a Tourist Guide in Spanish and English and have been living and working in Malta for 20 years. I live in Birkirkara since 2002 and through the years I became in love with this town. The everyday life whilst shopping for groceries, going to church or simply strolling around made me feel at home almost immediately, and the charm of its people the "karkarizi" made it easy for me to become familiar with places of interest and curiosities one can find here.

Description

Take this virtual tour to discover in real time one of the oldest cities in Malta, Birkirkara. The town owes its name to a prehistoric valley which runs through the middle of the city, and means 'running water'. On our live-streamed online experience, you will have the opportunity to see some of the interesting structures found around its historic centre such as the 17th-century Wignacourt Aqueduct that brought water to the capital city, the Old Parish Church of Santa Marija, the old railway track and the Birkirkara station, used until 1931.

Walking through the streets leading to the 18th century part of town, you will have the opportunity to admire the features of a typical Maltese house, with its wooden balconies and religious images. We will finish our experience around Saint Helen Square; here you will see the Kazin Banda a typical club belonging to the band that plays music during the religious feasts, the New Parish Church of Birkirkara and the Basilica of Santa Liena, designed by the Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafa.
