Description

This Online Experience will take you deep into the heart of Ollantaytambo, a town built by the Incas over 500 years ago that remains inhabited by their successors to this day.
Start at the small but beautiful main square to learn about Ollanta, the Inca commander after whom the town was named and whose statue occupies a prominent position in the square. We will then walk down the narrow, pebbled stone streets and witness the ancient water canals and the ruins along the mountains, all testament to one of the greatest civilisations South America has ever seen. Take a look at the ancient granaries and storehouses that made the town such a powerful location at its peak and allowed, in part, for the Incas victory over the Spanish Conquistadors. Also witness the beauty of the Temple Hill and the terraces on which various local crops are grown - such as the Coca, a local staple that is also notorious elsewhere in the world as the raw material used in the production of cocaine.

Visit with a local family at their hundred-year-old home, and learn more about local traditions, such as the practice of hanging skulls on the walls and having guinea pigs roaming about the floors.

Diego is a subject matter expert of Ollantaytambo in the most obvious fashion.
He knows some of the folks in the village allowing access into a private home and he knew their space like the back of his hands.

While he's not the most humorous or most energetic guide, he made it up with ingenuity, short sweet and succinct explanations of what we saw.
The questions from the participants were expertly answered and he proved he had a sleeveful of humour indeed.
