Traces of the Inca in Machu Picchu

Come join me virtually in Machu Picchu, an Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru, above the Urubamba River valley. Built in the 15th century and later abandoned, it is renowned for its sophisticated dry-stone walls that fuse huge blocks without mortar, intriguing buildings that play on astronomical alignments, and panoramic views.

Description

Come join me virtually in Machu Picchu, an Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru, above the Urubamba River valley. Built in the 15th century and later abandoned, it is renowned for its sophisticated dry-stone walls that fuse huge blocks without mortar, intriguing buildings that play on astronomical alignments, and panoramic views.

To begin this Online Experience, I will captivate you with interesting anecdotes about the Inca and this site. You will find out how the Incans chose Machu Picchu’s location, the meaning of its Quechua name (Quechua was the language of the Incas), and the names and functions of each of the nearby mountains.

After getting lost in Incan history for a while, we will find our way to the archaeological sites. First, I will show you the guardhouse, which offers exquisite views of the agricultural terraces and Machu Picchu's panoramas. The next place we will visit is the Sun Temple, an astronomical observatory. On our way to the temple, I will also point out the location of its Main Gate.

We will also visit the sacred plaza from where you can see the main temple, Three Windows Temple. Then, I will have to climb staircases leading us to the Intihuatana, a sundial. Finally, the tour will end at the sacred rock that lies in the same direction as Wayna Picchu mountain.

Rehider Quintanilla Velarde

I am 33 years old, I am originally from Cusco, Peru but I lived in Machu Picchu for almost 10 years, not just because of my work, but I really love the place as well. I am official tour guide and business manager. I am a people-person that’s why I like to meet people from all over the world.  I am passionate about my work too, trying to share my culture and knowledge about my country and my people. I do not get flustered easily when faced by any unexpected challenges.
