Description
My hometown, Nagareyama, is known as the birthplace of the White Mirin, the sweet cooking wine (do you like Teriyaki? Mirin is the essential seasoning to cook it) and is located only 25 km from central Tokyo with the natural beauty and rich history.
We will start our virtual exploration from a Shinto shrine with a big twisted straw rope that is considered as a barrier driving away bad lucks. It weighs 500 kg, and every October, about 300 local people cooperate to make new rope in a day. This event is designated as the intangible cultural asset by Nagareyama City.
Next to the shrine, there is a Buddhist temple related to a famous Haiku (the shortest poem in the world with only 17 syllables) poet.
After exploring religious places, we will visit an atelier in a grove, a traditional Japanese house that is related to a Mirin brewer’s family and its dry landscape garden, where I will show you how to have the traditional Japanese tea, Maccha.
