Description
Trace Nagasaki originated from a small feudal village when it first opened its port for Portuguese ships in 1561 to become a cosmopolitan city flourishing as a trading port. The city center began as a Christian settlement with a Jesuit Church atop its cape - which led to other Medicant missionaries also establishing churches nearby, and eventually, the town came to be known as a little Rome in Japan.
The eventual ousting of Portuguese and Spanish missionaries from Japan led to smaller communities such as Urakami, which were essentially Christians hiding from the authorities at the time. The Urakami Cathedral is nearby the site where the 2nd bomb was dropped during World War.
We will learn about the revival of Nagasaki from this moment in history to the peaceful city it is today. Along with it, learn about the various memorials and monuments from past and present.
