Description

This Online Experience is designed to provide you with an unforgettable tour of the historical ruins of the Mayan civilisation at Tulum.

We will begin our virtual tour by learning about the Mayan civilization and the role of Tulum as an important trading centre for them. Next, take a look at some of the houses once used by the ruling class of this site, and get to know how and why the Mayan people buried their dead inside their homes. As we explore various archaeological sites, I will help you learn how to tell a Mayan house and temple apart from each other. We will also explore the tiny beach - yes, beach! - where the Mayan people used to unload their boats.

Throughout the tour, I will ensure that your thirst for knowledge on the Mayans is well-quenched: Did you know that the Mayans used chocolate as money? Learn more about this unique currency and how it was employed to confirm marriages. Further, we will explore the curious customs and astrological traditions of the ancient Mayans, and learn why some idols in the ruins are portrayed upside down and how the buildings in the earthly Mayan cities aligned with the heavenly bodies in the skies.

Hugo Villagomez, as a kid, used to live with his family right outside the ruins of Tulum. He used to see the archaeologists' work and loved to hear the stories they shared when they were eating at his mother's restaurant. He started by teaching in a junior high school but in the end, decided to study and become a guide. He has been guiding people, since 1985, all over the Mayan area, Chichen Itza, Palenque, Coba, Ek Balam, and many others. I work for Holbrook Travel and Road Scholar. A year ago, the Council of Tulum announced Hugo as the Official Chronicler or Historian of Tulum and will have a presentation of a book written by him about the highlights of the area.

Julio Cesar Villagomez has been working for 22 years guiding all through the Mayan area in particular the peninsula of Yucatan. Julio gets a connection with Mayan mythology, history, and cosmogony inspired by his archeological teacher, the archaeologist Luis Leira, who showed him a deep understanding of their thinking, feeling, senses, philosophy, cosmogony, cosmos vision and how how they were utusing the arquitecture to represent their mythology.
