Description

This experience will take you to Kanchipuram, an ancient city with a number of temples, now serving as a Hindu pilgrimage site. The city is also famous for its silk sarees. You will be visiting the following places:

  • Ekambaranathar Temple: Our trip starts after breakfast with Ekambaranathar Temple. Legend has it that Parvati Devi did penance under the temple’s ancient Mango tree near the Vegavathi river.
  • Jurahareshwarar Temple: We now take you to another interesting temple - the Jurahareshwarar Temple, located right across the streets of Ekambarapuram, on the promenade linking Ekambaranathar temple from Rajaveethi. Also known as Airavatesvara Temple, was built by the Pallavas around 8th-century C.E.
  • Varadharaja Perumal Temple: Sri Devaraja Swamy Temple, popularly known as Sri Varadarajar Temple is situated in the eastern corner of Kancheepuram. Lofty Gopurams and lengthy walls bear testimony to the fame of the temple. The height of East Gopuram is 125 feet; width 99 feet. The height of West Rajagopuram is 96 feet and 92.5 feet. At the end of the Aswamedha Yaga, the brightest and most beautiful Lord Varadarajar appeared along with his consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi in Punniyakodi Vimanam which came out of Yoga Agni (Holy Fire).
  • 7th-century Mamandur rock-cut caves
  • Kailasanathar Temple: The temple was first of its kind of stone architecture as compared to others in Pallava that were stone carved or rock-cut. The foundation made of granite withstands the load of the entire massive structure. With over 58 shrines made in niches of the compound wall, the temple stands out as an epitome of construction with sandstone. Pillars of the mandapa have statues of lions standing on their hind legs, symbolizing people not to harm the temple.
