Description

Take a virtual walk in Sassi, the old part of Matera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is internationally famous for its peculiar dwellings carved into rock. Sassi is one of the most ancient towns in the world and has been constantly inhabited from the Neolithic Age. It was only in 1952 that the then Italian Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi decided to evacuate the population and relocate it from the Sassi to the modern part of Matera.
During the tour, I will show you the secret spots of Sassi, its streets and ancient churches, as well as the exceptional panorama over the underlying canyon that will leave you awestruck. Further, I will talk about the history of Matera and its people, which is also the history of myself and my forefathers, who inhabited this place eight thousand years ago. I will take you around the fascinating parts of the old town, talking about traditions and customs handed down by my grandfathers. We will also spot the locales of many famous movies shot in the Sassi, such as "The Passion of Christ" by Mel Gibson or the last 007 James Bond movie “No Time to Die”.
I am waiting for you to explore this hidden treasure in the heart of South Italy, called Matera!

Meet your Host
Nicola Ricciardi

I was born in Matera, and I continue to live here till today. I graduated in “The Conservation and Transmission of Historical Memories” and have been an official Tour Guide for the Region of Basilicata since 2010. I have also qualified as a Trekking and Environmental Guide for the Region of Basilicata since 2013. In addition, I work in exhibitions of contemporary art since 2007, and have been working in the exhibition of Salvador Dalì since 2018.
I love to read, write, travel, and my main hobby is doing genealogical researches. I travelled to the United States in 2019, where I met my relatives, descendants of Italians who migrated in the early '900's. I wrote two articles about the history of the industrialisation of my province for the local magazine "Mathera" in 2020. Matera is my main passion, and my roots are here.
