Echoing with the bushman clicks of the Wahadzabe and Datoga tribespeople, the valley of Lake Eyasi sits sandwiched between the volcanic ridges of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the rising Kidero Mountains to the south. A place of outstanding natural beauty, the lake draws travellers with attractions different to the usual big game rigmarole of this corner of Tanzania. For one, people flock here for the sweeping panoramas of undulating mountains as the Serengeti Plateau gives way to the swamps and river lands of the Rift Valley. There is then the colourful display of birdlife comprising pink flamingos, long-legged storks, pelicans among other waders, along with fascinating insights into the traditions of the local indigenous peoples, some of which have remained unchanged for as long as two millennia! Lake Eyasi tour guides efficiently organise hiking excursions all around this magnificent and eminently walkable region, where the caverns of the Mumba Cave (home to Stone Age human relics and remains) keep watch as the waters of Eyasi ebb and flow with the coming of the rainy and dry season.
