Pretty, peaceful Kigoma can be found sloping its way down to Lake Tanganyika from the verdant plateaus of western Tanzania; a cascade of tin-topped houses and dusty lanes that transforms into clusters of port jetties and old Germanic colonial homes as it reaches the edge of the water. Today, the town is perhaps primarily known as the starting point of the MV Liemba, or as the gateway to the fascinating Gombe Stream National Park, where the echoing pant-hoots of the chimpanzee rebound throughout the rainforests. Kigoma tour guides also point out the Livingstone Museum and colourful market betwixt the old Bavarian municipal buildings and tuk-tuk-peppered lanes of the town. That said, many travellers opt to just kickback around the wealth of secluded beaches and villages along the shores of the Tanganyika.
