Don’t be fooled by Dodoma’s utilitarian appearance: it sits on the edge of the Great Rift Valley and local tourHQ guides offer everything from dala dala rides to trekking excursions up Lions Rock.

Though dwarfed almost tenfold by the population of Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean coast to the east, Dodoma remains, defiantly the official capital of Tanzania. Since being designated the political epicentre of the nation, the city has struggled to prove its worth. It’s been hampered by slow growth and an architectural philosophy that seems to lean heavily towards the sterile, utilitarian and brutalist. But, despite it all, some interesting municipal buildings said to be wholly earthquake-proof and a smattering of lively bars and restaurants are worth a look, and hikes around the Lions Rock or a dala dala ride in the city provide a glimpse of its local authenticity.
Of course, natural wonders are never too far away on this periphery of the Great Rift Valley, and Dodoma tour guides are at hand to offer excursions out to spots like the so-called Simba Hill (suitably reminiscent of its Disney counterpart), and the legendary environs of the Ruaha National Park.
