San Sebastian, or Donostia, as it is known in the Basque Country of Spain is one of the best-kept secrets amongst beach-loving tourists. This loveable city is a dream for anyone who wants to experience the culture and history of a city break alongside the relaxation and water sports of a beach holiday.
For panoramic views of the city, hike up to the Urgull Mount, a historical heritage site or Monte Igueldo to see the San Sebastian town, the ocean and its beautiful scalloped shaped bay. A good dose of sun, sea and sand is assured at Playa de la Concha and Playa de Gros, two of the best beaches on the Spanish coast, also massively popular with surfers. Just to the north of Playa de la Concha is the Parte Vieja (Old Town), its churches, museums and the main Constitution square best explored with a San Sebastian walking tour guide. The food served up here is a gastronomic treat; pintxos, bite sized scrumptious morsels that are the basque equivalent of tapas, best imbibed through bar hops between ‘pintxos’ bars on every old town street.
