Now synonymous the world over with its namesake international court, The Hague is Holland’s classiest town by a long stretch. Its historic core, Oude Centrum stands adorned with the handsome faces of the Mauritshuis and Noordeinde palaces, dotted with open squares and presided over by the effigy of William of Orange. Also amidst this chocolate box of architectural treats that runs the gamut from Renaissance to Bauhaus, The Hague’s formidable line-up of fine-dining joints finds its focus, and al fresco coffee shops (more refined than their brothers in Amsterdam) spill onto the cobbles.
Elsewhere in the city, the Statenkwartier is a sea of manicured parks and historic homes, and bicycles click through the flowerbeds of pretty Westbroekpark. Beaches also ring their way around the heart of The Hague. Tour guides offer trips out to both Scheveningen and Kijkduin, two of the country’s prime seaside holidaying spots that come complete with long sandy beaches and regal Victorian piers worthy of Blackpool. The Madurodam showcases Holland in a nutshell, albeit a miniature one, and the opulent mansions of Wassenaar ooze affluence and money from every pore.
Put simply, this one’s not to be missed!
