An island that was once, quite literally, built on phosphate, Nauru is an example of boom gone bust. Over the last century Naurauns boasted the world’s highest per capita income stemming from its rich phosphate deposits. These were mined extensively before the inevitable run out, and despite a second wind, the reserves aren’t expected to last beyond 2050. Today, hefty unemployment rates and the absence of personal tax mean the small teardrop of an island in the midst of Micronesia is in a precarious economic position. This translates to very basic hospitality, transport and health service conditions that are not very conducive to tourism initiatives.
But that can’t detract from the nature led positives of this truly off-the-beaten-track destination. They are timeless. Like the boulder-spattered beaches that line the shores and the windswept ocean rollers, crashing in whitecaps against the rusting remnants of Japanese batteries from WWII. There are then the palm-fringed reaches of Buada Lagoon, where the water glistens in tropical hues of green and turquoise and the sands of Anibare Bay, a much-photographed spot and a favourite on the itinerary of any Nauru tour guide. There’s also the occasional raucous Aussie rule match to attend, while the smiling local fishing folk make for fine, fine company!
