Far from the sun-kissed coastal reaches that attract so many to Montenegro in the summer, Niksic offers an altogether different experience of this Balkan country. It's nestled where the western plains give way to the mountains of the Dinaric Alps, spreading out with it modern blocks and industrial centres below a line of sculpted, grassy knolls. Most natives will know it as the home of the nation's favorite beer: Nikšićko. That's the go-to tipple in all of the lively student bars and working clubs around this down-to-earth city, and is the fuel for what's considered one of the more authentic nightlife scenes in the country.
