Once a bastion right at the flashpoint between the Ottoman Empire and Christian Europe, Kolašin has seen its fair share of battles – some estimations say that the fortress here changed hands between the Turks and Slavs more than 20 times during the 1600s!

These days, peaceful mountain vistas some 1,000 meters above sea level make the town one of Montenegro's premier highland resorts. Famed for its clean air and woodlands, the whole region is a beauty to behold when the sun is shining, or when the snow is falling. Between December and March, the snow filled ridges of Bjelasica and Sinjajevina open to skiers with their tree-lined runs and Alpine-style lodges, ushering in Kolašin's main peak season.

However, many Kolašin tour guides would recommend a trip during the summertime as well. The city sits on the edge of the gorgeous Biogradska Gora park, one of the last vestiges of virgin forest in Europe.
