Kota Kinabalu

KK, as it’s endearingly known to most Malaysian locals, is something of a touristic hub for the whole of the Sabah region. It’s here that eager hiking folk come to strap on their walking boots before heading to the accessible peak of Mount Kinabalu in the north. It’s from here that adventuring scuba divers head to explore the curious World War II wrecks, coral reefs and marine parks that pepper the waters of nearby Usukan Bay, Tunku Abdul and Palau Tiga. Rafters come to gush down the Kiulu River, fishermen for the deep sea opportunities, and beach lovers for the various tropical postcard spots of Tanjung Aru and Likas Bay nearby.
But all that aside, KK is also a lively little town that’s worth some time in its own right, so be sure to ask your Kota Kinabalu tourist guide for the low down on the major sights and activities closer to town. Perhaps the curious Atkinson Clock Tower, the informative state museum, the bubbling gastronomic joints in Chinatown, or the elegant facades of the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque.
