Siena

A trip to Siena, Italy is like a trip back in time. The Old Town, a UNESCO world heritage site boasts a medieval cityscape characterised by winding cobblestone streets enveloping Tuscan architecture, its colourful well preserved walls and gleaming rooftops best seen from the top of the Torre del Mangia. This high tower also offers stunning views of the hills surrounding the city, with the famous vineyards and olive groves of Chianti to the north and the lush Arbia valley and rocky La Crete landscape to the south.
Without doubt, the best time of year to visit this beautiful, rustic city is during one of its bi- annual ceremonial horse races, known only as the ‘Palio’ held at the Piazza Del Campo. This shell shaped city square is beautifully laid out at the heart of the town;  it’s casual ambience of  cafes, shops and the lovely “fonte Gaia” provide a welcome break from visiting the palaces, museums and churches around, the star attraction being the Duomo at the Siena Cathedral complex nearby.
Food, like in any Italian city is an integral part of Siena’s culture. Surprisingly uncorrupted by the modern influence, one can look forward to local delicacies of  “Cinta Seneses” made of wild boar that along with hare make for delicious crostini. Supplement your gastronomical exuberance with a glass of locally brewed Tuscan wine, and a late night Passegiata (stroll) under the stars to complete the sublime experience that is Siena.
