Clustering under the misty peaks of Indonesian Java, the red-roofs, colonial buildings and humming portside streets of Semarang represent one of the country’s more off-the-beaten-track urban destinations. An unusual presence on the tourist map, visitors who stop by at this city will however discover a curious little side stream of Javanese culture and an interesting array of attractions, from the Dutch frontispieces of the old Kota Lama in the north, to the honorific temple complex of Sam Po Kong.
