Bukit Tinggi

Nestled between the misty jungles of the Minangkabau Highlands in West Sumatra, Bukit Tinggi is touched by the mild breezes of its surroundings all year round. In the town, a pretty colonial clock tower ticks over to the echoing calls of mosque minarets, while the looming peaks of Gunung Marapi and brooding Mount Singgalang keep watch from the south. There’s a truly endearing local vibe that runs through the streets here, and travellers are invited to pursue a range of wholesome activities—from seeking out views of Sianok Canyon at the terraces of Panorama Park, to casing out the Dutch legacy of Fort de Kock. There is also a smattering of worthy historical sights to explore, including the onetime home of Mohammad Hatta (a revered father of the Indonesian nation) and a series of fascinating old tunnels constructed by Japanese occupiers during World War II. What’s more, Bukit Tinggi tour guides are always at hand to help travellers plan further expeditions, to places like the wild Harau Valley, the Pagaruyung Palace, or the markets of Padang Panjang up in the hills.
