Best day of my 3 week trip to Asia!
Reviewed November 4, 2016
I just returned from Kathmandu where I had booked a one day local tour with Susan. My only regret is that I didn’t book more days with her. The good news started a few months earlier when she replied within hours to my booking request and extended through to the call the day before my tour to my hotel to confirm, and to the day of my tour when she arrived promptly and on time.
She had the day planned out and used her husband as the driver for our journey because her normal driver was ill. Having a backup is always good planning and because we had a driver we never had to worry about parking and she was able to talk and explain things during the journey, something she probably would not have been as able to do as well if she also had to be driving. At the end of seeing whatever we were seeing, she was able to make a phone call and the car always showed up where needed, thus saving us a lot of time. I had booked three places that I had wanted to see, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and Bhaktapur. These turned out to be perfect choices.
I had told her that my main interest was photography and she thoroughly respected that. She possesses a great knowledge of the history and the customs of these sights (and Kathmandu) and was able to effortlessly communicate this knowledge to me without any language or cultural issues. When there were times that I wanted more knowledge she was able to provide that and when there were times that I just wanted to photograph, she was able to get me to the spots where I needed to be and then was willing to give me as long as I wanted to photograph. There never at any time was any pressure to hurry up or to move along. If I wanted to stop, she was willing to stop for as long as I wanted.
Most importantly from my standpoint, Susan was there as a guide. Sometimes when you hire a guide you get the feeling that you are getting set up to be hustled, whether it is to buy more services, to eat in certain restaurants or generally in some way fork over more of your money. This absolutely was not the case with Susan, in fact I think she even bought me a couple of bottles of water throughout the day.
Without a doubt, if would chose Susan as a guide if I returned to Kathmandu. What she was able to show me in one day would have easily taken me three days to do on my own. Having a guide with me also kept me from constantly being accosted by the locals, wanting me to by something or wanting me to pay them to have their picture taken.
In summary;
Susan speaks excellent English and is polite and on time.
Susan shows you what you want to see and is patient and allows you to spend as much time as your need.
Susan has an excellent command of Kathmandu and the historical and cultural sites.
Susan will allow you to maximize your time in Kathmandu.
