The gold standard in tour guides

Reviewed January 11, 2019

Dinesh introduced me to his hometown of Kathmandu and his country. He brought our small group to places we would have never seen in a larger group. Things like the crew setting up for a large wedding ceremony who let us taste some of the treats they were preparing: and most memorable to me was his impromptu imposition on a sacrificial ceremony where I got to observe the inner sanctum of the elders performing the ceremony. It's not for the faint of heart but the explanation of the ceremony was absolutely fascinating. He took us to mountain villages with huts formed of mud bricks and a year later when I learned of the earthquake, my first thought was for the people in those villages he had introduced me to.But Dinesh is so much more than just a competent guide. He is a real person with a family, a cultural curiosity that is engaging and very definite ideas of his own cultural values. He and I had many wonderful personal exchanges about family, culture and values. As a group we also had some spirited discussion of the pros and cons of "arranged marriage."I've encountered dozens of tour guides over the years and to my mind, Dinesh Thanju is the gold standard by which I evaluate all others. He is the real deal. I hope many others will have the privilege to make his acquaintance as I did.

We have been to Nepal a number of times since 1982.  Always a marvelous place to visit and wonderful people to meet. Dinesh Thanju was the best guide we have ever had in Nepal.  Knowledgeable, caring, funny and eager to show us places off the traditional visitor routes.  We had a great time and look forward to returning again soon.

Nepal and the Mystical Himalayas - under the guidance of Dinesh Thanju

Reviewed January 9, 2019

I should say at the outset that my husband and I are former Canadian diplomats and as such we truly value guides who 'interpret' their contries beyond the usual brief of indepth knowledge and easy connection with visitors under their guidance. Dinesh Thanju is a truly accomplished guide with all the fundamentals one looks for - articulate, detailed and breath of knowledge,  ability to find solutions to inexpected difficulties, easy rapport with everyone in the group. Top marks on all these fundamentals. Above this, what we valued most perhaps was the deep interest and respect Dinesh shows local people, the humanity in him and the efforts he makes to find local people, vignettes and stories to make the scenario come alive but also to interpret Nepal for his clients. He makes us observe  and he makes us think.  He does Nepal a great service. We wish him well.

This is Dinesh for me!I have spend much time with Dinesh during my six-weeks stay in Nepal. He has shown me all the hidden, quiet spots in noicy Kathmandu, his favorite restaurants and places off touristy paths and therewith took me into his Nepali world. Dinesh is such a knowlagable person, able to answer every single question about Nepal's context. To me most impressive was his way to explain things in a spititual way - life becomes much more meaningful, understandable and deeper when I started changing my perspective. Our conversations have been enriching, inspiring and unforgettable.

During this period we became really close friends and I will come back to Nepal to spend more time together.
