Hungary’s artsy hub just outside the capital, Szentendre is riddled with galleries and craft boutiques, creative emporiums and curious modern art displays. It attracts huge crowds of visitors mainly due to its proximity to Budapest, as well as for its perceived historicity and avant-garde charm. And while that veneer is largely a product of good marketing, it’s difficult not to fall in love with Szentendre as you wander its stone-clad streets, between its stuccoed buildings and Romantic statues. First time visitors should be sure to ask their Szentendre tour guide for a list of the galleries and art shows of the moment, and take a walking tour of the sun-splashed (at least in summer) roads as they weave outwards from the Fő tér (central square). Not to be missed are the museums especially thhe Open Air Village museum, the quirky and wonderful Szabo Marzipan Museum and the happening Retro Design Centre.
