Itinerary
-
Day 0: Airport Pickup
You will be picked up at the airport. From there, it goes to Moshi's hotel, where you can get your bearings on your hike. Your guides will provide detailed information about your hike and check your hiking gear.
Dinner and overnight at PANAMA GARDEN RESORT or a similar hotel in Moshi -
Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,800m/5,900ft)
After an early breakfast in Moshi, head to Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border. After checking in at the gate, begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. On day one, hike through the forests, where you can see and hear wildlife. Lunch on the way before continuing to the first campsite. Rongai climbs the less forested north side of the mountain. Due to the long drive to the gate, the Rongai route is one of the less travelled routes on Kilimanjaro. The Rongai Trail is believed to offer the best chance of spotting wildlife. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner included
-
Day 2: First Cave Camp (2,600m/8,400ft)
On the second day, you hike the moors of Mount Kilimanjaro. The Rongai route is relatively short and steep, which reduces hiking times. Experience Mawenzi Peak that day.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner included -
Day 3: Kikelewa Camp (3,600m/11,810ft)
This day is an acclimatization day where you can hike at the beginning of the day and rest in the afternoon and evening. The hike is relatively short but steep. Mawenzi Tarn Campground is nestled below Mawenzi Peak and offers stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner included -
Day 4: Camp Mawenzi Tarn
The fourth day is an acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn. We advise you to hike a little higher during the day before returning to Mawenzi Tarn in the afternoon.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner included -
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m/14,200ft)
On this day, cross the moonscape of the saddle to get to the final campsite. Kibo Camp is located just below the Kibo cone, giving you a view of your final destination. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner included
-
Day 6: Kibo Camp (4,750m/15,580ft)
Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Walk by flashlight for the next six hours. The ascent to the crater rim is the hardest part of the whole hike. The trail is very steep all the way to the crater rim at Gilman's Point.
The hike from Gilman's to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and not very difficult in terms of hiking. However, the altitude makes the hike long and tiring. The hike to the crater rim takes about two hours. When you reach Uhuru, snap photos of your guide and group at the top before beginning the descent to Horombo Hut.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner included -
Day 7: Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft)
After breakfast, end the trek with a descent to Marangu Gate. Your final trek on Kilimanjaro is stunning and passes through the Kilimanjaro cloud forest. Watch your steps as you descend, as the trail can be slippery. Our vehicles will wait for you at Marangu gate to take you back to Moshi/Arusha. You can buy t-shirts and sodas at the door.
