Itinerary
-
Day 1:Moshi to Mandara Hut
Meet your guides and porters after breakfast, and complete your packing. Transfer to the park entrance, where your Kilimanjaro climb will commence. Complete the necessary formalities at the park entrance before entering the rainforest.
Embark gently through the lush, green rainforest scenery, heading towards Mandara Hut. This can be done faster, but the slower, the better for the eventual success of the climb and bring in observations. The speed you walk during the first two days will partially determine the chances of reaching the summit. Take your time during the trek, as a slower pace increases the chances of a successful climb and allows for better observation of the surroundings. Each day you will have a packed lunch to eat along the way. The forest teams with birdlife and colobus and other monkeys may be seen.
After reaching Mandara Hut, where you will have cooked dinner and settle into the A-frame huts illuminated by solar power, each room accommodates four people, with a total capacity of 60 at the camp. Water is sourced from springs and piped into the camp, ensuring a fresh water supply. Restrooms, including flush toilets, are located behind the main hut. Your head guide will provide you with the agenda for the following day.
Overnight Mandara Hut – Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
Hiking time: 4-6 hours, 6,004 feet to 8,856 feet -
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
- In the morning, enjoy a refreshing cup of tea and, if needed, warm water for washing up. After a cooked breakfast, depart from Mandara Hut and commence your trek towards Horombo Hut. About one-half hour after leaving Mandara Hut, you will transition from the lush rainforest to picturesque alpine meadows.
- Throughout the day, savour the magnificent views of the towering peaks and sweeping plains below the mountain. The vegetation is also spectacular, especially higher up, where endemic giant lobelias and senecios may be seen. As you continue climbing, be aware that the air becomes thinner, and you may start experiencing the effects of altitude.
- Arrive at Horombo Hut, your destination for the day. Take advantage of the warm washing water provided and take a well-deserved rest. In the evening, enjoy a satisfying meal at the hut. The accommodations at Horombo Hut resemble those at Mandara Hut, with a total capacity of 120 and each hut accommodating six people.
- Water is sourced from a stream behind the huts, ensuring a fresh supply. Restrooms, including platform toilets southeast of the main hut and one flush toilet, are available.
Hiking time: 6-7 hours, 8,856 feet to 12,225 feet
-
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Continue your climb to Kibo Hut at the foot of Kibo PeakContinue your climb from Horombo Hut towards Kibo Hut, located at the foot of Kibo Peak. The route will lead you up to the saddle between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Traverse through a high-altitude desert landscape characterized by rugged and rocky terrain.
The route takes you up to the saddle between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi and then across the high-altitude desert to the huts. Until you reach the saddle, the terrain is very similar to the previous day, with the landscape rugged and rocky. Again, take it slowly to acclimatize; the last half hour to the hut can be very tiring as the hut is some way up the peak.
Maintain a slow and steady pace to allow for proper acclimatization. Remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated during the ascent. Take your time during the last half hour of the trek to Kibo Hut, as it can be particularly tiring due to the uphill climb.
Get as much rest as possible and prepare your things for the next day. The stone house with a small dining room and several dormitory rooms leading off the main corridor has bunk beds for 60 people, sleeping 12 to a room. There is no water, so bringing an adequate supply from Horombo Hut is important, but your guides will help you with this. If you cannot sleep, relax as much as possible, as your body needs rest before the next very strenuous 24 hours ahead.
Overnight Kibo Hut – Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
Hiking time: 5-7 hours, 12,225 feet to 15,520 feet

Day 4: Summit to Horombo Hut
Wear warm clothing, gear up for the summit, and freshen up with hot water or drink.
The crater's rim at Gillman's Point (18,635 feet), recognized as the top, is reached after a stiff climb up a steep, loose scree slope. The first part of the ascent to the Hans Meyer cave is indirect, going around large rock outcrops. Pace yourself accordingly, conserving your energy for the challenging scree slope ahead. Zigzag your way up slowly and steadily.
Try to maintain a steady pace, trudging up rhythmically through the starlight. On average, this takes 6 hours from Kibo to Gillman's Point, where you will hopefully see a fiery sunrise behind Mawenzi. Since Gillman's Point is recognized as the top, you will receive a certificate for your achievement from the Park authorities.
Rest and recover at Gillman's Point, and if conditions permit and your guide approves, you can proceed for an additional 2 hours along the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro, standing at 19,340 feet. Reaching Uhuru Peak will earn you a gold certificate and the immense satisfaction of standing on the "Roof of Africa."
Continue on the descent, which is in some ways as complex as the ascent, and you will be tired as you make your way down the steep slope.
Back at Kibo Hut, you will have a rest and something to eat. Return to Kibo Hut, where you will rest well and enjoy a meal.
Remove excess warm clothing and continue the descent towards Horombo Hut, where you will spend the night.
Overnight Horombo Hut – Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
Hiking time: 8 hours to Uhuru, 19,340 feet! 6 hours descent to Horombo Hut

Day 5 :Final Descent to your hotel
Continue your descent (slowly so as not to sprain an ankle or twist a knee) to Marangu Gate after breakfast. If you have made it to Gillman’s or Uhuru, you will sign the book, and your head guide will pick up your certificates.
Transfer to your hotel to celebrate your achievement and reflect on your incredible journey.
Hiking time: 5-7 hours
