The itinerary

Day 01

Climb Through Rainforest to Mandara Hut

• Begin your climb to Mandara Hut (2,743 m).
• Transport from your hotel is arranged to the park entrance.
• Enter the rainforest for a 3-hour walk to the first hut through verdant scenery.
• The forest teems with birdlife, and Colobus and other monkeys may be seen.

Day 02

Trek to Horombo Hut Across Alpine Meadow

• The second day's trek is to Horombo Hut (3,760 m), which is about ten miles and takes 5 to 6 hours.
• About half an hour after leaving Mandara Hut, emerge from the rainforest onto an alpine meadow. This is a very pretty day, with splendid views of the two peaks and the plains below the mountain. The vegetation is also quite spectacular, especially higher up, where giant lobelias and scenic landscapes may be seen. Higher still, the vegetation becomes thinner, and the effects of altitude, commonly experienced as shortness of breath, may begin to be felt.

Day 03

Acclimatisation Hike to Zebra Rock

• Hike for 2 hours to Zebra Rock for acclimatisation.
• Return to Horombo Hut for your overnight stay.

Day 04

Cross the Saddle to Kibo Hut

• Continue to Kibo Hut (4,730 m), which is at the foot of Kibo Peak.
• The route takes you up to the saddle between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi, and then across the high-altitude desert to the hut. Again, the climb takes about 6 hours.

Day 05

Summit Uhuru Peak and Return to Horombo

• In the morning, return from the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).
• Descend to Horombo for your overnight stay.

Day 06

Descend to Marangu Gate and Return to Moshi

• Descend to Marangu Gate, where the vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi.
