Description
Ljubljana, as the capital of Slovenia, always was and still is a city of literature. A Place where you can imagine poets and writers walking down the street and sitting behind their desks in a small room, where they found peace in writing. Slovenian people have always been proud of their language as a pillar of identity and a way to express their thoughts and feelings about the time and place they lived in. The Slovenian anthem is made of verses from Slovenian most respected poet, France Prešeren, and Ljubljana’s main cultural centre is Cankarjev dom, named after modernist writer Ivan Cankar, who lived and worked in Ljubljana at the beginning of 20th century. And there was Primož Trubar, a protestant priest of the 16th century, that has written the first book in Slovenian language. Tour of Important Literary Points in Ljubljana
- Meeting point under the statue of France Prešeren on Prešeren Square. We hear some stories about his life and work and take a short distance walk to the house on the banks of the Ljubljanica River, where the writer of the first book in the Slovenian language, Primož Trubar, lived.
- Little further, there is a house of 17th-century writer and traveler Janez Vajkad Valvasor.
- We proceed to the house of Žiga Zois, who was kind of a patron to poets and writers of the Enlightenment era. We will find out where the only book of poems written by France Prešeren was printed.
- We take a short walk to a former factory that produces sugar, where modernist poets and writers met and lived.
